It is well established that a rich and varied environment supports children’s learning and development. It gives children confidence to explore and learn in secure and safe, yet challenging, indoor and outdoor spaces. At The Close Nursery we have a large outdoor garden area that facilitates this development which is split into various main areas.
We have a large flat outdoor area, covered in a speial safety surface, that can be used with climbing equipment, bikes, balancing beams and so on and is also safe for toddlers and babies to explore on their own. There is a woodland area that children can play hide and seek in, or dig in the soil to discover what lies beneath. There is a sand pit within a large covered decked area that is in use all year round. There is also a large grassed area for football or running games. Behind a small fence is our garden area for growing fruit and vegetables.
Being outdoors has a positive impact on children’s sense of well being and we assist this by going outside at least twice a day, more if the weather allows and we can have story time outside, or snack for example.
Being outdoors offers opportunities for doing things on a different scale and in different ways than when indoors. It gives the children first hand knowledge of their local environment and we go outside in all weathers to help facilitate this.
Outdoor environments help children to have the freedom to explore using their senses, and to be physically active and exuberant. Our large area offers the space for all the children to run around, enjoy ball play, riding bikes or climbing activities in a safe and secure way.
